Designing a calm restroom for changing nappies and breastfeeding, and painting a sky mural.
The brief from a local cafe was to transform a dark den at the end of a corridor into a cosy space where parents would be happy to change nappies. After sending a few initial mood boards, they chose a soft blue palette and sky theme backdrop. As the walls curved into an arched ceiling, wallpapering was not an option, and so I offered to paint a wrap-around mural instead.
A small nook created the perfect opportunity for a bespoke bench with custom seat-pad. Wall-mounted lights weren’t possible due to limitations, so we got a plug socket installed and got creative with plug-in wall lights and a table lamp.
After measuring for the bench and seat cushion, I got to work with the painting, starting with mixing and overlaying blues for depth, then working in clouds, some planes and birds.
I applied a matt varnish to protect the walls, and added some accessories like the rug, cushions, sheepskin and changing basket as the finishing touches.
