SMÖRGÅSTÅRTA – SWEDISH BLT SANDWICH CAKE RECIPE
As someone who doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth, this Swedish sandwich cake recipe is the thing of dreams. The easiest thing to throw together, substantial, savoury, and with a super pretty result, it’s ideal for any kind of entertaining – be it a garden party, barbecue or even informal gathering. It’s essentially a round sandwich, and can have as many layers as you have bread, and obviously whatever filling tickles your pickle – think smoked salmon, pickled cucumber, cream cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, spring onion, chives, radish, avocado, crayfish, pickle, chicken, the list is virtually endless.
In this recipe, I stick to the classic BLT, but it’s more of an example of how you put it together, and how easy it is to accomplish.
You will need:
One large round loaf of bread – shop bought or homemade.
Cream cheese – a lot of it. I used 3 tubs.
Chives – to decorate.
Edible flowers – hard to find and pretty pricey, but worth it.
Contents – I used cucumber, lettuce, tomato, avocado and crispy bacon.
Method:
1. Slice the bread into horizontal slices, so you are left with 3 round slices of bread (or more if you can manage)
2. Spread a little cream cheese, add your first topping (like cucumber slices).
3. Repeat with the next layer. Spread cream cheese, and add a topping.
Or lots of toppings.
4. Put on the ‘lid’ (the top of the bread loaf), then spread cream cheese all over it. Decorate the side of your sandwich with the chives, and place the edible flowers on top.
Voila. The best BLT you’ll ever eat.
